About this collection

What's here

Original heavyweight fleece from the years American sportswear was still made thick. Crewnecks, hoodies, pullovers and half-zips, mostly from the blanks that supplied college bookstores and pro shops: Russell Athletic, Champion, Nike Team, Starter, Jerzees and Gear for Sports. We date each piece by the tag, the stitching and the country of manufacture, and the listing says which.

Crewneck, hoodie or pullover

Crewnecks are the plain round-neck cut and the most versatile. Hoodies from this era run heavier than modern ones and hold their shape. Pullovers and half-zips are the sportier cut, usually team issued. All three are here; filter by what you want.

Weight is the tell

A 90s sweatshirt feels substantially heavier than a new one. Dense fleece, reinforced collar, boxy cut. If a vintage sweatshirt feels thin and papery, it is not from this era. Everything on this page is the real weight.

Sizing

Every listing shows chest and length measured flat. 90s cuts run roughly one size larger than today, and Champion Reverse Weave and Starter run larger still. Measure a sweatshirt you own and compare to the numbers rather than the tag size.

Condition

Graded Excellent, Good or Fair with photos of any flaw. Faded prints and softened fleece are the point. Holes, stains and stretched collars are disclosed.

Ships same day from Nashville

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a crewneck, hoodie and pullover?
A crewneck is a sweatshirt with a round neck and no hood. A hoodie adds the hood, usually with a drawstring and front pocket. On this page, pullover refers to athletic pullovers and half-zips with a more technical, sport-driven construction. All three fall within the broader vintage sweatshirt collection.
What makes a vintage sweatshirt worth buying?
Weight is one of the first things you notice, but it is not the whole judgment. The best vintage sweatshirts combine dense fleece, resilient ribbing, balanced proportions, strong construction and a graphic worth living with. A 1990s Russell Athletic or Champion crewneck should feel substantial and hold its shape. The material, construction and execution decide whether it enters the collection.
Which vintage sweatshirt brands do you carry?
Russell Athletic, Champion, Nike Team and Starter form the core. Russell Athletic and Champion are closely tied to the campus bookstore era. Nike Team and Starter bring college and pro team graphics, embroidery and more sport-specific constructions. The label matters, but the individual piece still has to earn its place.
Which brand makes the heaviest vintage sweatshirts?
Champion Reverse Weave and heavyweight Made in USA Russell Athletic sweatshirts are often among the densest pieces from the period. There is no universal ranking. Weight changes across models, decades and fabric blends, and a country-of-manufacture label does not determine quality by itself. Every piece is judged individually.
What is Champion Reverse Weave?
Champion Reverse Weave is a heavyweight sweatshirt construction cut on the cross-grain to help reduce vertical shrinkage and maintain its shape. Ribbed side panels add flexibility through the body. When a vintage Champion sweatshirt uses Reverse Weave construction, it is identified in the product title and description.
How do you know a sweatshirt is actually vintage?
Dating begins with the neck tag, followed by the care label, country of manufacture, stitching, construction, graphics and licensing details. No single feature establishes an exact date. Every listing includes the brand and our estimated era, based on the evidence present in the garment.
How does vintage sweatshirt sizing work?
Vintage sizing is inconsistent. A tagged large can fit smaller, larger or simply differently from a modern large depending on the brand, decade and silhouette. Every sweatshirt is measured flat from armpit to armpit for chest width and from the collar seam to the hem for length. Compare those measurements with a sweatshirt you already wear. The tag is context. The measurements determine the fit.
How do you grade condition?
Every vintage sweatshirt is graded Excellent, Good or Fair, with material flaws photographed and described. Fading, softened fleece, cracking and light pilling can contribute to the character of a thirty-year-old garment, but they are still disclosed. Significant staining, open holes, failed seams and collars that have lost their structure do not enter the collection.
Will a vintage sweatshirt shrink?
Most vintage sweatshirts have already been washed many times, but additional shrinkage is still possible. The measurements describe the garment as it exists now. Follow the care instructions provided, wash cold when appropriate and avoid high heat to preserve the fit, graphic and fabric.
