Frequently Asked Questions

What years of vintage Starter jackets do you carry?
Our collection is centered on the late 1980s through the 1990s, with a particular focus on 1988 to 1996. That period produced many of the Starter jackets people continue to look for: substantial pullovers, puffer anoraks, strong team palettes and oversized athletic silhouettes. Starter was founded in New Haven in 1971, so its history extends well beyond those years. We date each garment individually rather than treating one tag or year range as a universal rule.
What kinds of Starter jackets are in the collection?
Mostly Starter pullover windbreakers, puffer anoraks, half-zips and full-zip jackets. Expect concealed hoods, front pouch pockets, quilted linings, color-blocked shells and licensed NFL, NHL, MLB and college graphics. Steelers, 49ers, Bruins, Notre Dame, Michigan and other teams appear as we find them. Vintage Starter windbreakers and pullovers can also be explored through their individual collections.
How do you authenticate a vintage Starter jacket?
We examine the complete garment: the main label, secondary label, care label, country of manufacture, league marks, hardware, construction and graphic application. A woven script Starter label with the star is associated with many original pieces, and Made in Korea or Made in USA labels are common throughout the period we collect. None of those details establishes an exact year on its own. The evidence has to agree across the garment.
How can I tell vintage Starter from a modern reissue?
Starter is still an active licensed brand, so a legitimate Starter logo does not automatically make a jacket vintage. Original and modern pieces are separated through the combination of tag design, care-label format, country of manufacture, league branding, materials, hardware and construction. We inspect those details before dating a jacket and state the estimated era in its listing.
What does the Starter Pro Line label mean?
Pro Line identifies officially licensed NFL merchandise associated with the league's sideline aesthetic. It appears on some of the most recognizable Starter jackets of the 1990s, but it is not an exact dating system and was not exclusive to one manufacturer. We consider the Pro Line label alongside the Starter tag, league marks, team graphics and construction before describing the piece.
Does Made in Korea or Made in USA prove that a Starter jacket is vintage?
It is useful evidence, not complete proof. Many sought-after Starter jackets from the late 1980s and 1990s were made in Korea or the United States, but the country label cannot date a garment by itself. We use it as one part of a larger evaluation that includes the labels, hardware, construction and licensed graphics.
What are the warning signs of a reproduction or altered jacket?
The clearest warning is inconsistency. A main label, care label, league mark, team uniform reference and construction method should make sense together. Printed or heat-applied graphics are not automatically incorrect, since original Starter jackets used several application methods. We look for inaccurate branding, mismatched licensing details, unusual hardware, altered labels and construction that does not correspond with the stated era.
How do vintage Starter jackets fit?
Many have the generous, boxy athletic silhouette associated with 1990s sportswear, but the fit varies by style. A puffer anorak and a mesh-lined windbreaker carrying the same tagged size may fit very differently. Every listing includes the chest and length measured flat. Compare those measurements with a jacket you already wear rather than automatically sizing down or relying on the tag.
Do you test the zippers?
Yes. Every zipper is opened and closed before the jacket is listed. We also inspect the pull, teeth, surrounding seams and concealed hood closures where applicable. A replacement zipper or one that catches does not necessarily disqualify an otherwise significant jacket, but it will be identified in the listing. We do not describe hardware as original unless we can reasonably support that conclusion.
How do you evaluate condition?
We inspect the zipper, lining, shell, cuffs, elastic, seams, graphic application and insulation. On nylon jackets, we look for pulls, abrasion and heat damage. On puffer anoraks, we check the quilting and seams for escaping fill. Age alone is not treated as a flaw. Wear can add character and patina, but structural damage or anything that affects how the garment performs is photographed and stated clearly.
Is Starter still in business?
Yes. The original company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 1999, and the brand subsequently changed ownership and was relaunched. Starter now produces new licensed sportswear alongside the vintage pieces already in circulation. That continued history is why we evaluate the entire garment instead of relying on the Starter name alone.
Do you have my team?
The collection changes continuously, and most pieces arrive individually. Check the NFL, NHL, MLB and college collections for what is available now, or message us with the team, school or particular Starter jacket you have been looking for.
